Description
The material is soft, easily carved (with a simple lock-blade cutter knife) soapstone.
Notice the ball under the lion's paw. You will see balls often in the paws or mouths of Japanese stone carvings near temples because it's a play on words in Japanese: "Tamashi" means "soul"; "tama" means "ball".
The entire sculpture is smaller than a man's thumb.
The only tools I used were pencil, eraser, sandpaper, mirror, ink, and locking cutter knife.
I brushed a sumi (india ink) substitute into the cracks to bring out the detail.
